5. Add about ½ tsp. of sugar to water for a little flower pick-me-up. Also, a scant amount of bleach (tablespoon to half litre of water) or you can add vodka or other clear alcohol will help limit bacteria growth in the water.
6 A tested method is to crush an aspirin and put it in the vase with water. Add your packet of flower food (1 packet to half a litre of water) and the vase should have been washed thoroughly beforehand. The next day add a 2nd aspirin and this will keep the water clean for 5 days. After 5 days remove the water and wash the vase with warm water and washing up liquid and then replace the water and repeat the aspirin and feed procedure.
7. Try placing pennies in the bottom of the vase. The copper makes the water more acidic, which prevents bacteria from growing.
8. Remove any dying flowers immediately. Dying flowers emit ethylene gas that will cause the other, healthy flowers to wilt.
9. Mist the flowers with water every day
